Mindful Eating: How to Stay in Shape With This Simple Trick – 20 Minute Fitness #009

Do you find yourself overeating here and there? Mindful eating teaches you how to listen to your body and just eat as much as your body needs.

Mindful eating is not some sort of crash diet nor is it about giving up the foods you love and crave. Far from it — it’s all about experiencing your meals more intensely — and savouring the pleasure of eating. A useful side effect is that you end up giving your body more time to communicate and tell you when to stop. Learn in this 20 Minute Fitness episode how to master the art of mindful eating and utilize it to stay in shape — even during the holidays!

Show Notes

In this episode we look at mindful eating from two different perspectives. We firstly explore mindful eating as a viable and perhaps, more sustainable approach to maintaining a balanced diet. Rather than counting calories and macronutrients and seeing food as energy rather than something that should be enjoyed.

When considering mindful eating from this viewpoint, we mean monitoring your portion sizing and calorific intake by using your hands to measure the correct proportions of macronutrients. For example, a woman should have one thumb’s worth of a fat dense food per meal. We have a great infographic of this in our mindful eating blog article.

We then consider mindful eating as a mindset towards eating. A relationship that should be built up with your food. Mindful eating from this perspective is a technique that helps you gain control over your eating habits. It has been shown to help with weight loss, reduce binge eating and overall help you feel better. It derives from the Buddisht concept of mindfulness. Mindfulness is a form of meditation that helps you recognize and cope with your emotions and physical sensations. It involves eating slowly and without distraction and learning to cope with guilt and anxiety about food and more.
